How We Worship
Church of the Apostles embraces three distinct Christian traditions in our worship. We use the concept “Three Streams, One River” to help explain how we worship together, particularly on our weekend Worship Services. Our heart is to worship God and to lead others into the joy of his transforming presence. These three streams flow together into a river that takes us to God’s throne.
- Catholic: We recognize God as awesome and worthy of our respect, honor, and worship. Our worship is thus liturgical and we maintain a connection with the ancient traditions of the Christian church. The liturgical, or catholic, stream is seen every week as we gather at the Lord’s Table to partake of the Eucharist.
- Evangelical: We are a Bible-based congregation. The evangelical stream is visible as we minister the Word of God through Scripture reading and Bible teaching, affirming Scripture as the authority and guide both for our worship and our daily lives.
- Pentecostal: We are a Spirit-led congregation. We believe that Jesus sent the Comforter, his Holy Spirit, to be with us. The charismatic, or Pentecostal, stream is seen as we sing songs of love and praise to God with passion and intimacy. In worship, the power of the Holy Spirit is released in tangible ways. We look for and delight in manifestations of the Spirit, including physical and emotional healing and the edification of prophecy.
“Ascribe to the Lord the glory due
his name;
worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.”
Psalm 29.2
At Our Weekend Services
Adult Education Classes We are blessed to have many gifted Bible teachers in our midst. We are pleased to offer Adult Education Classes most Sunday mornings at 8:30am. These classes are designed so you may drop in whenever you are available. Childcare is provided with advance notice by calling the office at 703.591.1974, not later than noon Friday.
Nursery Care is provided at both the Saturday evening and Sunday morning worship services in Nurseries B and C. (Saturday: infants - age 5; Sunday: infants - age 4) Each child is registered. Parents of infants and younger toddlers will be given a silent pager that will alert you should your child need you during the service.
Children & Youth on Saturday Evenings Our children and youth are encouraged to participate in every aspect of our worship celebration. Children age 6 and older remain in the sanctuary to worship with their families. Our youth are welcome to worship either with their families or with other students.
Children's Sunday School meets during our Sunday morning services after a brief Children’s Focus in the Sanctuary. Children age 4/5 through Grade 6 meet in the classrooms for worship, biblical teaching, prayer, and fun with friends. The children return to the service for Communion. If you would like more information about placement in Sunday School for your preschooler, please contact Kristin Colligan, Children's Ministry Director, at 703.591.1974.
Youth on Sunday Mornings participate in every aspect of our worship celebration. You will see the future of the church ministering in the Praise Band, and as Prayer Ministers, Ushers, members of the Altar Guild and the A/V Team, Greeters, Acolytes, Lectors, and Lay Eucharistic Ministers. We are blessed by their willingness to share their gifts and are encouraged by their dedication to the church and their devotion to the Lord.
Prayer Rail Ministry is available at both services following Communion. Trained and commissioned Prayer Ministers will pray with you at the front of the sanctuary on the right.
If you are visiting with us, please fill out the white card in your service bulletin and return it to the Information Center in the lobby for a FREE CD of the sermon. You may also use this card to share prayer requests, praise reports, or comments, and provide the office with changes in address, phone, and so on.
Audio CDs of the sermon may be purchased in the lobby immediately following the service. CDs are also available from past services, The Father’s Blessing, and other events. Many of our recent sermons are also available for download at no cost on our media page.
The offering is intended for people who regularly attend our services. Please do not feel obligated to give if you are a first-time visitor.
