Local Outreach Ministries

Contact the church office for information on getting involved with any of these local outreaches.

Bethany House

Bethany House provides an immediate response to the needs of spouses who have been abused physically or psychologically, and to the children who accompany them, through their Facility Assistance Program of housing, support services, and childcare. The ministry also addresses longer-term needs and provides home visits and a follow-up program of support services for up to two years. Bethany House seeks to help spouses regain their health and dignity and become responsible and participating members of the community.

FACETS

FACETS (Fairfax Area Christian Emergency and Transitional Services) is a partnership of churches, businesses and service groups in the Fairfax area that seeks to respond to the multiple needs of homeless and low-income families living in the community. FACETS encourages them to seek self-sufficiency, and empowers them toward that end by advocating on their behalf and providing transitional services. This is done through two separate programs: Homeless Intervention Services and Family Enrichment Services. For further information on the ministry or on how you can become involved, please contact Mary Jane Donehoo.

Grate Patrol

The Grate Patrol joins the Salvation Army in feeding some of the homeless in Washington, D.C. Participants buy, prepare or serve food two Thursdays per month, and distribute clothes, coats, shoes, and Bibles as donated. The ministry also provides prayer, encouragement, acceptance, and affirmation to the homeless. Participants have the opportunity to grow in compassion toward the needy, learn how to demonstrate that compassion, and grow in community with one another.

The Lamb Center

The Lamb Center is a local ecumenically sponsored day shelter providing a number of services to the homeless and poor in our community. Assistance and services offered include hot meals, showers and laundry facilities, and help in locating employment and housing. Volunteers are always needed in these areas as well as help with bible study, and prayer. It’s a place where lives are being transformed daily through the power of Christ, and the hands and compassion of loving believers. Please contact Céline Baker for more information or on how to become a volunteer serving at the center.

Prison Aftercare Ministry

Prison Aftercare is a multi-denominational Christian program working in cooperation with the chaplain at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. Its purpose is to assist inmates at the Detention Center to improve their opportunities to grow spiritually, to access available resources in the community and to build more constructive lives following their release from prison.

This ministry provides support for those believing inmates who specifically request help and who are screened and recommended for participation by the Chaplain at the facility.

Church members who volunteer to serve as Aftercare Ministers are required to complete an 8 week training course which includes an introduction to counseling and listening skills, substance abuse as well as instruction in assisting residents toward spiritual growth.

If you would like more information on this ministry, please contact the Church office at 703-591-1974, or contact Céline Baker or Don Foy.

Study Buddy Program

This is an after school care, mentoring & tutoring program for students between the ages of 7 to 17 years old. It is offered on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays, 4pm to 6pm. Adult and student volunteers are both welcome. Please contact Céline Baker (703-591-1974) for more information.

Young’s Memorial Church

Reaching out to our neighbors at Young's Memorial Church of Christ (Holiness) and their neighborhood in Anacostia, in southeast Washington, DC, is based on building relationships through program support and participation.

Together we have reconditioned the original church building for use by Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington, participated in summer tent revivals, children's summer camps, Christmas programs providing food and clothing, and development of a non-profit Community Development Corporation. We have also exchanged pulpits and worship visits.
