"The Church is the only society that exists for the benefit of those who are not its members." - William Temple
Can we live into that, realizing we, as the Church, are here to be Christ to those who do not know him? Our church buildings need to be welcoming to those not in the Church in ways they will experience as welcoming.
God's goal in his provision for us is to draw us back to himself. Israel constantly turned away despite God sending prophets. But it was actually through Israel's enemies that God provided a path back to the promised land.
Putting on the new self and living by the Holy Spirit can only come about in us if we are dying to ourselves and willing to put on the identity of Christ. It is a true act of self sacrifice. Jesus himself allowed his body, his earthly identity to be destroyed because of what it meant for humanity. What are we willing to surrender? What are we holding back?
